The University of Melbourne has maintained its position as the top Australian university in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, moving up one place to 39th in the world.

Professor Glyn Davis, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne said the improvement reflected the University’s strong research ethos.

“Our vision as a university is to combine excellent education with world-leading research,“ he added. “We’re proud to be ranked number one in Australia and number three in the Asia-Pacific region.”

The Shanghai ARWU Ranking is based on six objective indicators, which include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, the number of articles published in the journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.

For more than a decade the University has pursued its Growing Esteem strategy, with the aim of making Melbourne one of the top 40 research universities in the world.  There is understandable pride in achieving that goal, with all the benefits for our community and world that great research delivers.
