UNSW - Return to Australia

We are writing with an important message about our teaching next year. From Term 2, 2023, we plan to complete our return to in-person teaching for those courses that are best delivered in that mode.

What does this mean for international students?

Last month, the Australian Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) announced that all universities must return to compliance with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS) requirements by 30 June 2023. This means that students holding a student visa must enrol in at least one in-person course per term and complete no less than two thirds of their study face-to-face. Both current international students and international future students should plan to join us in Sydney before the start of Term 2, 2023.

In limited circumstances, some current international students may be able to complete their program offshore. Please read these Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Through Term 1, 2023, we will maintain support for students who are still unable to join us in-person and help to ensure that they have time to make any required adjustments to their living and working arrangements in preparation for Term 2, 2023.

We will continue to monitor the situation in parts of the world where quarantine, flight availability and visa processing times make travel to Sydney difficult. We expect the return of all international students will be possible by Term 2, 2023. Please advise students not to delay making any required arrangements including visa, travel, and accommodation.

To assist students’ ability to plan for future study, we are reviewing course delivery modes for Term 2 and Term 3 courses in the 2023 Timetable and will update these by early December. We will let you know when the Timetable has been revised and how to understand the offerings.

As a university, we believe in the value of face-to-face education, while also recognising the opportunities to leverage new delivery modes that may make university study more accessible. We will continue to leverage the innovations delivered through the course of the pandemic to ensure that you receive an education aligned to our position as a Top 50 global university – whether you are enrolled in an in-person or online program.
